JMT Newsletter - June 2022
Welcome
Welcome to the June 2022 Journal of Moral Theology Newsletter.
In the craziness of our world, sometimes we have difficulty seeing its beauty that mystics and poets always ask us to be open to contemplate, a posture present in Teilhard de Chardin’s Mass on the World: “The one who is filled with an impassioned love of Jesus hidden in the forces which bring increase to the earth, him the earth will lift tip, like a mother, in the immensity of her arms, and will enable him to contemplate the face of God.”
This month, we highlight the forthcoming the new book on the Global Theological Ethics Series and invite you to consider submitting an article for our open issue that will be published next January.
The world is suffering from its feet being turned into rubber, its legs into leather, its body into cloth and its head into steel. The word is suffering from its trees being turned into rifles, its ploughshares into tanks, as the image of the sower scattering seed yields to the tank with its flamethrower, which sows only deserts. Only poetry, with tis humble voices, will be able to save this world.
Vinicius de Morais, Brazilian poet quoted by Pope Francis in Querida Amazonia
JMT Issues
We invite you to submit your article for consideration for our next open issue, that comes out in January 2023.
The July 2022 issue will feature a symposium on Teaching Catholic Social Thought, guest edited by Jon Kara Shields. The series of short articles, by both highly experienced and new teachers, is devoted to the fruits of reflection on pedagogy. Articles by Daniel Cosacchi, Casey Mullaney, Teofilo Giovan Pugeda, Bernard Brady, and Joyce Bautch are joined by an account by Sarah DeMarais on teaching CST to African women religious and a companion reflection by three African women religious on teaching in their contexts. Together the articles focus on transformative experiences, contextual adaptations, pedagogical interventions, and the contextual challenges of teaching CST.
Global Theological Ethics Book Series
The second book in our book series in partnership with the CTEWC – Catholic Theological Ethics in the World Church – will be published in a week or so. Entitled The Rising Global Cancer Pandemic: Health, Ethics, and Social Justice, this book is edited by Andrea Vicini, SJ, Philip J. Landrigan, and Kurt Straif. Considering that cancer is the first or second cause of death in 134 countries, the leading cause of death in most high-income countries, and that most of the increase will occur in low- and middle-income countries, the authors address the injustices of cancer from an interdisciplinary perspective. Scientific contributions and ethical inquiry aim to help civil society to identify and name inequities related to cancer incidence, access to treatments, and mortality. You can access the books of this series on JMT website.
